Mochiko

Pin It Now!
There's an interesting new snack spot in Ayala that you guys should try out.

Mochiko sells mochi ice creams whi are Japanese treats. These are usually made out of mochi, chewy glutinous rice cake with powdered sugar, and ice cream. They are usually made in pastel colors.

The colors of their mochi are to die for. Sorry, but they are just so cute. It was a bit difficult to pick which one I would be getting for myself. So, I asked for their bestsellers and opted for the cookies and cream. The boyfriend, a lover of everything in the shade of green, got the green tea one. Each one costs P70.

The easiest way to describe mochi ice creams to Cebuanos is that it's very similar to our own local masi. The masi is also made of glutinous rice, but with sweetened peanuts. With mochi ice cream, you get a whole scoop of ice cream at the center.

My cookies and cream mochi ice cream was really good. No wonder it's a bestseller. The texture of the cookie inside and the sweet ice cream blends well with the sweet mochi. It was really good and yummy. The green tea was also good. However, the mochi somehow overpowers the taste of the green tea ice cream which robs it a bit of its real flavor. Nevertheless, it was still yummy.

I really like Mochiko's mochi ice cream. They are unique and yummy. Being a tad bit pricey for a snack is my only concern. It's not really that filling of a snack. But if you don't mind spending a bit for a yummy treat, then go ahead. You'll love the pretty colors!

If you want to drop by, you can find them beside Tablea at Ayala's Active Zone.

The Art of Cheap Date (Part II): Korean Ice Cream

Pin It Now!
So, we got nothing to do and I just wanted for us to hang out. Like the old saying goes: idleness is the work of the devil. Not that I believe in devils, idleness is an uneasy feeling that makes me want to chew my hair out. Good thing, I (or we) didn't.

We decided to visit the grocery store and grab something that I haven't really tried. TIP: When you are in a budget, you can find great treasures hiding among the shelves of your local grocery store.

We got ourselves Korean ice creams. Do't get me wrong, I'm not transforming myself into a Korean or some sort. It's that I wanted to try something new. It's like experiencing Korea at your own country. The boyfriend is already into Korean ice cream since he has tons of Korean friends here. Mine have gone back and so far, I've only tried homemade Korean food and drinks courtesy of my former student.

Our picks for that day.

Anyway, I was having a hard time figuring out what I really wanted. There were a number of Korean-looking ice cream displayed that it got so confusing. If only I tried to learn Korean I wouldn't have any issued with choosing which one said it's the best Korean ice cream. I picked up the watermelon-looking ice cream just because I have no idea what the others were. The boyfriend got himself the sandwich-looking cream.

We sat down at the Suisse Cottage just near the grocery department. I also ordered the intriguing chocolate silvanas. Since I first tried silvanas at Sans Rival, I've already had this thing for silvanas from different bakeshops.

Watermelon-y! ♥

I was so happy with my watermelon ice drop of some sort. It looked like a watermelon! You can't imagine the beam on my face when I opened the wrapper. It was just so cute. It was shaped like a cut watermelon. It has red and green colors like just a watermelon. It also has seed-like candies, just like watermelon! The ice drop was fulfilling. It was sweet as expected and tasted much like watermelon flavored candies. It's also interesting to note that the the green and red parts have different flavors which are complementary. The change of flavor is quite fun.

Weird ice cream . xD

The boyfriend's ice cream was queer. It looked like a sandwich. It doesn't really look as yummy as you want it to be. But when you take a bite, it has a good mix of soft sandwich at the outside and the sweet ice cream at the center. Talk about good looking food.

Chocolate silvanas.

The food I was really excited about was the chocolate silvana. I was intrigued since it was cheap (P14) and also looked yummy. The chocolate toppings fell when I took a bite. It was difficult to eat the entire piece clean. With every bite, the silvana breaks apart. It seemed too fragile to even hold. It was good but they didn't keep it cool enough to keep everything intact. If the silvanas were kept in the fridge, then the real taste would come out and eating it wouldn't be an ordeal.

The boyfriend's signature look (in his school inform). LOL.

So all-in-all, we spent below P150 for the fun snacks we had. My watermelon ice cream costs around P40 and the boyfriend's weird ice cream costs P 60ish. It's not bad for having something new and interesting. It was exciting to try out ice cream that you can't read. It's like an experiment and it's so much fun!

Pipo's Ice Cream: 'Coz We Were Close to Being Broke

Pin It Now!
Who wouldn't want some de-stressing after a stressful long exam? This is especially true when you are unsure whether you passed or not, trust me. This is why I thought of treating the boyfriend for an ice cream after his test in Nihonggo.

This is what you get when you're broke.

Since we were broke and hungry at that time we just opted to go for tempura and squid roll before having our ice cream. We went over to Metro Ayala's Food Avenue and got ourselves a stick of tempura and two sticks of squid roll. During broke-r days, we resort to even cheaper food on the streets. We spent P48 for the food that we got.

Pipo's Gelato food cart in Metro Ayala Food Avenue.

So for ice cream, we tried Pipo's Ice Cream which is also located in Metro Ayala's Food Avenue. This was actually our second time of trying the place out. Our first was last week but I forgot to bring my camera. So anyhow, for this ice cream visit we got mango float and  stracciatella (which was recommended by the sales guy). They had other flavors as well like coconut, rocky road, blue ocean, bubble gum, nocciola italia and a whole lot more.

Stracciatella ice cream. ♥

For our first time, the boyfriend and I ordered tiramisu and after 8.  I like the tiramisu better. It tastes like any other tiramisu ice cream. It's like a cheap imitation of Gelatissimo's tiramisu which happens to be my favorite. The only thing with Pipo's is that it's cheap so you wouldn't expect it to be as flavorful and as creamy as Gelatissimo. It is already a good buy. After 8 is a mint flavored ice cream which the boyfriend likes. I'm not really a fan of mint (and green) so I passed. The boyfriend loved it.

Mango float in a cone. Yum!

Pipo's mango float really taste like mango float (duh!). I loved it even though it's not my order. I kept asking the boyfriend for some little scoops since it's so yummy. Stracciatella, on the other hand, is yummier. I like its texture. It's is creamy but also has chunks of chocolate in it which makes the taste dynamic.

Although the price is affordable, their scoops are not really enough. Just a scoop would make you want more. They have really small scoops which can be justified by its price. It's also not as creamy as Gelatissimo which is sad. Nevertheless, it is a good buy for those who are on a budget.

Me, eating my stracciatella. Disclaimer: I do not know the other people in the picture.

For only P40, you could already get a scoop of ice cream from Pipo's. You also have the option to choose whether you'd get a cup or a cone. They are available as soon as Metro Ayala opens.
